Epson EcoTank Not Printing Black: Safe Troubleshooting Order
A cautious sequence for Epson EcoTank black ink not printing, from nozzle check to cleaning cycles and when to stop.
The short answer
When an EcoTank stops printing black, start with ink level, nozzle check, and one normal cleaning cycle. Avoid repeated cleaning loops because they consume ink and can fill the maintenance box. Use Power Cleaning only when Epson's model guidance supports it.

Start with a pattern, not a refill
A full black tank and a blank page can be surprisingly confusing. The tank shows how much ink is available; a nozzle check shows whether that ink is reaching the page.
Use the printer’s own nozzle pattern so an app setting or computer queue does not cloud the result. Keep the sheet beside you for the next comparison.
Work through these checks
- Read the black ink level against the marks on the tank. Use the model’s refill instructions if it is below the minimum.
- Print a nozzle check from the maintenance menu described in your model’s manual. Look for missing black lines.
- If the black pattern has gaps, follow one normal cleaning cycle only when the manual permits it. Observe its wait time before checking again.
- Compare the new pattern with the first. If gaps remain after the manual’s allowed attempts, stop and check its next step; do not keep pressing Clean.
What the result tells you
A clean black pattern points you toward the document, print settings or paper rather than another bottle of ink. Try a plain text page with the correct paper setting.
If the pattern remains incomplete, Epson’s exact-model instructions determine whether Power Cleaning is appropriate. It uses substantial ink and needs enough waste-ink capacity.

- Do not buy random printhead flush kits before using built-in maintenance.
- Do not run repeated Power Cleaning cycles back-to-back.
